typical competition day

  • Arrival/Practice

    • Students arrive early in the morning and practice their show.

    • Parents load trucks with props

    • Parents organize food that is brought for the day

      • Every week we may ask for donations of food to help feed the troops

    • Parents socialize or run errands before leaving for the competition

  • Load Instruments

    • After practice, students and parents finish loading the equipment trucks

      • ALL STUDENTS MUST HELP

  • Lunch Break

    • All students are released for lunch

    • They are allowed to leave the school grounds, but may only go to the restaurants that are located on the same side of Dixie Highway as the school and may NOT cross Kenton Lands Rd.

  • Load Buses

    • After lunch students return to the school and begin loading the buses for the trip to the competition. At the beginning of the season, students choose a bus to ride and will ride the same bus every time.

    • Each bus will have at least on parent chaperone on it all times.

    • Students must follow all bus rules while in route

    • At this time the equipment trucks have usually left and will be waiting for us at the competition

    • Parents are welcome to caravan with the buses or leave earlier and drive on their own.

  • Arrival at competition

    • Once we arrive at our destination, the students are expected to unload the buses and meet with Ms. Shamblin to receive additional instructions for the day. Sometimes they will have downtime immediately, but usually they will be getting dressed and ready to perform

    • The equipment trucks are usually already unloaded and ready for the students to change and perform but on some occasions there will need to be some assistance in getting these unloaded.

    • Parents are now setting up tables and food that has been brought and donated for the students.

    • Box moms are preparing the uniform trailer and getting everything set up to help students with uniforms and hair.

    • Parents sit back and relax, enjoy socializing with each other, play games, watch other bands perform and have a fun day with their kids.

  • Performance

    • Approximately 45 minutes to an hour before our performance the students get dressed in their uniforms, warm-up, and wait for their chance to awe the crowd.

    • Box Moms help students with their uniforms, fix hair, and make any adjustments to uniforms necessary, then go watch Dixie perform. They must return immediately after our performance to help with hanging up the uniforms when the students change back out of them.

    • Props Crew/Pit Crew help transport and place equipment and props on the field. These parents will not be able to watch the show from the stands but will quickly place items, watch from the track/sidelines and quickly remove equipment and take back to the trucks as soon as the band finishes its performance.

    • After they perform, the students usually change out of uniform immediately. If they perform again (not all shows), this will be repeated later in the day closer to the next performance time. If not, students will load their instruments and props on the trailers, and then wait for the awards later in the day. Parents will also help pack up props, instruments, equipment, and food, and then enjoy the rest of the show.

  • Awards

    • Everyone goes in the stadium to watch the awards ceremony and cheers for the teams - ALL TEAMS.

    • After all the awards we load the busses and head back home.

  • Arrival at Dixie

    • Upon arriving back at Dixie every student (Band, Percussion, Color Guard) is responsible for helping to unload the trucks of the equipment, instruments, uniforms, and props. It is not the responsibility of the equipment drivers to do this alone. No student is permitted to leave the school grounds until all the trucks are unloaded and everything is put away. Each student must check out with Ms. Shamblin before leaving.
