2007 season
From Patrick Haughey - He would like to wish his
mom, Patti, a happy 50th birthday on November 6, and thank her for all her
support this 2007 season!!!!
From Jordan and Misty Brough - We wanted to say hello and "Dixie High Band
is great! You guys are great!"
To the Marching Colonels,
I was finally able to make it out to see my alma mater
in person last night at Campbell County and words cannot say how very proud I am
of the band. You guys looked excellent and with it being early in the season
there is so much room to work and improve and I truly believe you will be a
force to be reckoned in class 5A. I am going to do my part to spread the word
and see how many alumnus we can get back for the home regional show so that we
can support you and give a home field advantage.

2006 Season
From Don Bradner -
Marching Colonels,
It's that time of year again. For some, THE defining time. After
all, this could be your last competition in this state this season. For the
seniors out there, this may be the last time you roll your toes on Kentucky
turf. So, the question is now clear... not "will we qualify?", but rather
will we go out with a bang this season. People all across the state know that
the colonels have been great this season. Of course there is the great drumline,
but what about the whole picture. The real challenge to you this evening is to
have the entire band gel as one for the best performance of the year. Eliminate
mistakes and enjoy yourselves. This is the apex of the season, the ultimate
high. The Dixie band needs to join together and leave no doubt whatsoever in
the minds of the judges, and most importantly the spectators of Kentucky that
the Marching Colonels are one of the top in the state. You all must be able to
look back on this performance with feelings of accomplishment and greatness.
Qualifying for state is merely a bonus. Leave your legacy and be able to look
back years from now and say "wow, we were great that year". So shake your knees
and take to the field with all the pride you can muster.
Forever have eyes with pride,
From

Hello. We are alumni parents, and my daughter, Leslie,
(class of 1999) and
son, Alex, (class of 2004) were both in Dixie's Marching Band. I remember
the last time the Dixie Band made it to Semifinals--that was in 2001. The
show was called "In Living Color" and we made 7th place. What a thrill!
That was a long time ago. Dixie is "due" to do this again!!! Good luck on
Saturday--have a great day and have fun out there!
Our hearts are with you!
From Kelli McMullen here, class of 00’
My little sister and brother play for Lloyd’s Band and they said that you
all gave them a run for their money, and sounded great doing it! I was very
proud to hear it and wish you all the best of luck this season, see you at Lloyd
this weekend!

Message from a fellow Music Lover
-
I received an email from a K-5 music teacher with Whitley
County Schools in Northern Indiana. She sent this after our Saturday performance
at the Mid-States Championships. (We came in third out of 20 schools!!) Her
son marched for his last time for the Columbia City Marching Eagles at the same
competition. What her email is referencing is an "extra" performance that Robb
Duddey had the kids do after the competition at about 10:45pm in the parking
lot. I think her email speaks for itself.
"Subject: To the Dixie Heights Marching Band
I know who won the competition Saturday evening. The scores didn’t say it was
you, but it was.
We stood in the parking lot and watched you replay your show for the final time.
Parents pulled cars around and turned on their headlights so you could have the
last spotlight. And then you played, oh did you play. You played your hearts out
and enjoyed the moment. While other bands were discussing scores and errors and
packing and hurrying, you played. You didn’t play for judges, but just for you
and your families. You played for joy and to remember the hours and hours of
dirty, sweaty practice that got you there. It was 37 degrees out and your field
commander wore gold lame’, but she didn’t seem to mind. We weren’t family or
friends, but we walked across the lot, drawn by the energy you created.
I know why you played the way you did, because I watched him. I don’t even know
your directors name, but he is the man who, during your evening competition,
called out to you to “Play from your hearts!” I couldn’t take my eyes off of
him, because he loves the music. And I watched you reveal your love of music
that was taught by him.
And as you played in that parking lot, I watched him again. He urged you to
greatness to play from your hearts, to live in the music, to revel in the sheer
bliss that comes when you and the music can’t be separate. I watched buses
pulling out and the lot slowly emptying and you played on.
I’ve been a musician all my life, and that is a few more than 50 years. In that
time, it has been my privilege to watch, hear, learn from and see many great
moments in music. The moment you created last Saturday will live forever in my
heart and mind as one of the finest moments in music I’ve ever witnessed. I
hope each student realizes what happened that night and carries the memory with
them throughout their lifetimes. They are truly blessed to be part of a program
run by high expectations and great, deep abiding love of music -- and the art of
making music beautiful.
From one musician to another--
Becky Walter"
A NOTE FROM THE BAND DIRECTOR AT
SOUTHWESTERN HIGH SCHOOL
- I really didn't get a chance to meet you Saturday, but I
wanted to let you know congratulations on an excellent season and performance.
I also want you to please share with your students how much I respect them
standing and giving Southwestern a standing ovation after their performance -
what a class act that was!
I missed your band playing their show one last time at the trailer
Saturday night as I was walking back from the stadium with my staff, I heard
some of it, and it was outstanding. My kids thought you guys were great!
Please pass on my congratulations to your students, staff and parents for
a wonderful season!
Sincerely,
Ruth Nickels
